A Virginia man has filed an Actos lawsuit against the drug’s manufacturer after he was diagnosed with bladder cancer. Timothy Plaugher alleges that Takeda Pharmaceuticals failed to properly warn patients that using Actos for more than one year could increase a patient’s risk of developing bladder cancer.
Concerns about the link between Actos and bladder cancer arose after a five-year study revealed that patients who use the drug for more than one year are 40% more likely to develop bladder cancer. The studies prompted health officials in France and Germany to pull the drug off the market. Officials with the Food and Drug Administration have not announced plans to issue an Actos recall.
Takeda is facing additional legal troubles from an employee who alleges the company misrepresented safety data to the FDA. The lawsuit claims the company failed to report non-deadly and non-hospitalized cases of congestive heart failure.
