Actos lawyers may see as many as 10,000 lawsuits filed within the next few years against the drug’s manufacturer, according to attorneys involved in these cases. Takeda Pharmaceuticals is facing thousands of lawsuits from patients who allege that taking the widely-prescribed diabetes medication led to developing bladder cancer.
The first Actos bladder cancer lawsuit was filed in August 2011 by a woman in Louisiana. Since then, 54 Actos lawsuits have been filed in the U.S. against Takeda Pharmaceuticals alleging the company failed to properly warn patients that taking the medication could lead to an increased risk of severe side effects, including bladder cancer.
Actos was withdrawn in France and Germany in 2011 after a study found that the drug could increase a patient’s risk of bladder cancer compared to other type II diabetes drugs. Despite these moves by European regulators, the Food and Drug Administration has not announced any plans for an Actos recall.
